Welcome to Term 2! Each term brings a variety of activities for our students, the staff members and parents and this term is action packed. Over the next few weeks, our students will participate in the ANZAC Day March, the Holy Spirit Fun Run, the Holy Spirit Parish Sacramental Program, NAPLAN and the fete and that is before we are half way through the term.
Last year, Term 2 was a different story, I am grateful that these activities can take place as they are great ways for our students, staff and parents to feel a sense of belonging and achievement.
Do you know that through the efforts of past and current parents and carers our students reap the benefits? The low ropes course, near the 2D classroom (Ross River Road frontage) and Urban Warrior Course on our oval are just two of the playgrounds which were developed due to the contribution of parents and carers through activities such as the fete. Please support our Fete Committee and in particular, Cherrie Pierce and Kristy Bates who are the Fete convenors.
In the very near future parents, carers, grandparents and older siblings will be encouraged to volunteer for just one hour on the night of the fete. If you are unable to help throughout the year in other aspects of the school this is one opportunity where we need ‘people power’. Everybody loves a volunteer!
Last Thursday and Friday, the teachers attended a conference organised by Townsville Catholic Education. The title of the conference was Encounter. Teachers across the diocese gathered and were encouraged to reflect upon where they encounter God. We encounter God through Jesus and what can be described as the ‘a-ha’ moments or sacramental moments.
The kindness of others, the joy of the birth of a newborn, the awe of creation are all opportunities to encounter God. As we continue in this season of Easter, it is a great time to reflect on how we encounter God in the ordinariness of everyday life – the person who lets us go before them in a queue, the person who expresses thanks or someone who lifts the mood of our day. It’s not too hard to find God when we look around.
Our enrolment interviews are underway, if you are yet to put in an application or know of someone who is intending to apply for a prep position, please encourage them to contact the office.
Have a great start to the term, I hope you had the opportunity to ‘declutter’ as our Trash n Treasure convenor will look forward to your contributions!
God bless,
Geraldine
Welcome back everyone and it is great to see so many smiling faces on the students (and the parents) as they arrived back on Monday. As we move into the cooler months, it is a great time to dig out the red school jumper and give it a quick wash in preparation for the "chilly" weather. As per our school uniform policy, it is a plain red jumper or the school jumper which can be purchased from School Locker.
One of the Gospel stories told at this time is the story of the two disciples who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus after his death and Resurrection. They were telling others what had happened when Jesus suddenly appeared among them. Jesus reassured them telling them not to be afraid, and convinced them he was real and alive, despite his wounds, by eating a piece of fish. Jesus told his disciples to go out and tell the world that he had died and risen to new life. They were to be his witnesses to all that had happened. As members of the Christian family we are called to follow Christ and be witness for him every day of our lives by living God’s way.
As we begin a new term, this week at Holy Spirit we value excellence. Striving for excellence is trying to do your best. At Holy Spirit, staff are always looking for ways to help students achieve excellence by doing their best to produce excellent work. We pray that our students draw upon their many skills and show excellence where they can.
Last week, the Holy Spirit teaching staff attended the Encounter Gathering in Townsville with teachers from across the Diocese and other invited guests. Over the two days we listened to presenters and participated in workshops.
ANZAC DAY: On Sunday during the ANZAC Day ceremonies, we will remember
those who have served our nation during war, those who have died, those who have returned from war, those who are still in peacekeeping teams and those who have died while helping with humanitarian aid in war torn countries. This Friday, 23rd of April, our school will participate in a whole school liturgy in the Hall which will include laying a wreath in our sacred space.
PROJECT COMPASSION: During Lent, we were asked to help raise funds to send to CARITAS to support their mission work. Well done to all who contributed to the Project Compassion boxes at home and at school. This year our school raised just over $1650 for the ‘Be More’ Campaign. A little bit goes a long way to help those in need!
St Joseph the Worker Retreat: The Josephite Companions of Townsville are holding a retreat on Saturday 1st May at the House of Prayer between 10am and 4.30pm. ‘What’s Working in 2021’ is a retreat that looks at our daily lives, work and play through a Christ-centred focus, with Saint Joseph the Worker as the foundation. Cost is $65with restricted Numbers. For more information contact Pauline McGuire on 4775 7688 or pmcguire@tsv.catholic.org.au
God bless.

Please keep Fr. John in your thoughts and prayers. Sadly Fr. John’s sister-in-law passed away during the holidays. His sister-in-law was the main carer for his mother who has also been seriously ill. Loss is always difficult but particularly when you cannot be with your family.
Please also keep in your thoughts and prayers, Yinghara, one of our prep students and his mother Jonelle. Sadly Dynzie, Yinghara’s father passed away over the weekend.
We ask for God’s healing love for both families.

Bill Nettle Rugby League Gala Day
Last Thursday prior to the school holidays, our Senior Rugby League Team participated in the Bill Nettle Rugby League Gala Day. In the pool games, Holy Spirit was far too strong, HSCS 20 defeated Cranbrook 0 and HSCS 24 defeated Belgian Gardens 4.
Our team progressed to the semi final against Weir SS who we had previously lost to in Interschool Competition. Our boys dominated with determined defence, HSCS 20 defeated Weir 8. As a team, an area we aimed to improve was our line speed in defence, which we achieved only letting in 3 tries all day.
Holy Spirit qualified for the grand final against Proserpine SS, who have been previous champions many times. In a close game, HSCS 8 defeated Proserpine 0, finishing undefeated and the Bill Nettle Champions for 2021. An exceptional team effort demonstrating our school motto: Strength in the Spirit.
We are extremely proud of the team for their outstanding performances and excellent behavior. It was a pleasure to accompany the boys and a very enjoyable day. All players (A-Tai, Andrew, Lucas, Callum, Zachary, Logan, Eli, Harry, Tyrese, Blaize, Bryce, Giann, Zayd, Harper, Elliot and Oliver) represented our school well in both sportsmanship and rugby league skills on the field. Thank you to our parents for supporting the team, once restrictions lifted for the finals.
Yours faithfully, and in sport

Seasons for Growth offers children and young people a safe space to come together, and share their experiences of change and loss.
It is a confidential program organised by Tegan Towler (Guidance Counsellor) and Kerry Donlan (Pastoral Chaplain), student companions.
The program is not designed to counsel but assist young people to cope with some of life’s big issues, e.g. separation, divorce or the loss of a loved one. Many families experience such change. The program is designed to cater for students after a period of time, at least 12 months has passed.
Another important point to consider is that for some children, they are quite resilient and coping very well without additional support opportunities. The Seasons Program equips children with strategies to deal with the variety of emotions, caused by grief and loss.
Program delivery will occur at a set time each week for 8 weeks, each session is approximately 45 minutes in the Pastoral Chaplain’s room. If you would like to know more and feel that your child/children would be interested in participating in our Seasons for Growth Program in Term 2, please contact me by email kdonlan1@hsstsv.catholic.edu.au
I can also be contacted via the school office ph. no. 47794255
More information about the program, please visit the Seasons for Growth website.
