Throughout the past term, we have seen some impressive accomplishments of our students.
Recently, our students received their NAPLAN results which indicate a child’s performance across a small window of time. NAPLAN results do provide valuable information to assist our teachers to plan and teach according to student needs. However, there are other ways to assess student achievement across a variety of domains:
- Many of our students were successful in the Writing Section of the Townsville Eisteddfod,
- Our prep students led their first assembly and displayed their confidence when speaking in front of a gathering of several hundred, something which would be daunting for many adults!
- Across a variety of sports, a number of students participated at an elite level and
- Our students in 4B introduced the ‘Lids for Kids Project’. See below to see how their recycling project will support children needing prosthetics.
I hope you find the time during the holidays to reflect on your child’s learning and development over the past 10 weeks. Perhaps their reading is more fluent, they might have mastered division or become an accomplished line dancer as we saw at our Holy Spirit Under the Stars Concert and again at our Grandparents’ event. If we take the time to look there are many indicators that children are learning.
We are looking forward to ‘Colour Me Crazy’, the next celebration in this our 50th year. I hope you will be able to join us for mass and our ‘colourful’ event on Sunday, 13 October.
Thank you for your contribution this term. Every positive comment you make contributes to our whole school community. Over the holidays enjoy your family time and a break from the routine of school.
God bless
Geraldine
The holidays provides a fantastic opportunity to check over school uniforms and chase up any adjustments that need to be made. Our children do grow and we do love to play, so some of those black shoes may need replacing. Please see photos of what is acceptable and what is not. Thank you for your assistance with this.
As we come to the end of the term, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the success that has been experienced throughout the term. We started the term with safety talks from RACQ, Mulkadee and Catholic Education Week. We had a presentation from Mindset Australia about positive attitudes and resilience. Some of our students represented our school at the Challenge Games and some finished season 2 interschool sport. We celebrated with an open day and 50 years Under the Stars concert. Our year 5 classes went to Gumburu for their annual camp and discovered the joys and wonder of the rainforest. Book Week was another huge success and many join in the celebrations of 'Reading is my superpower'. Thanks also to our catholic high schools for fostering our love of reading with our students. we have had Tennis Qld, AFL, Rugby Union visit to deliver programs to our students in Years 2, 3 and 4. The Year 2's have been to Billabong Sanctuary to further their learning about Australian animals. Who could forget the fantastic day for Grandparents 2 weeks ago. Another celebration of special people in our lives. Now we finish with Eisteddfod and the Blackhawks Challenge this week. Somewhere in all this, we continue to provide quality teaching and learning in our school. Wow! What a term. Thank you to all involved in our school community.
Next Term, we see the first ever "Colour Me Crazy at Holy Spirit Catholic School. It will be held on 13 October at 10am. It will co-incide with our Parish / School Mass at 8.30am. It is open to only Holy Spirit Catholic School families. It is a $2 entry or $5 for a family. The money raised will assist a school in bushfire affected areas in Qld. There will be 2 sessions so you can run/walk the course and then volunteer for the other session for others to have a go. If you can help out on the day, please contact myself at the school or email pmartin@hsstsv.catholic.edu.au

After overhearing the Pharisees complaining about him spending so much time with tax collectors and sinners, Jesus told a number of parables. In the Gospel reading on Sunday, three stories are told. They are sometimes referred to as the ‘Parables of the Lost’. The first story is that of the lost sheep where Jesus tells of the owner of the sheep who leaves 90 of them to fend for themselves while he goes after the one sheep that is lost. The Lost Coin is the story of a poor woman who lost one coin from her savings. She searched and searched the house, carrying on until her efforts were rewarded and she found it. The third story is the Prodigal Son that told the story of a father who forgave his son the bad choices he made and welcomed him home.
In each of the stories, the behaviour, response and attitude of the person who loses something precious images the behaviour, response, and attitude of God towards human beings “lost” through doing wrong. Taken together, the parables show that the main issue at stake is not so much sin and its forgiveness but the loss and recovery of human beings, who are so precious in God’s sight. The whole mission of Jesus is to reclaim human lives for God and to show people how much God values them by publicly celebrating that reclamation.
This week at Holy Spirit we value friendliness. Friendliness is a quality of openness and warmth that makes you feel welcome and at ease. Your friendliness is evident in your facial expressions, body language and, most importantly, in the way you treat other people. The ‘Parables of the Lost’ are a good reminder of God’s love and forgiveness and how we should treat other people. While we don’t have to be ‘best’ friends with everyone, we should always try to be friendly to those we meet or interact with. We can look at how we can spread God’s love and mercy to others. This week we pray that our students show the value of being friendly towards others by making everyone feel welcome and try to recognise everyone’s special gifts and talents to help them feel valued. We also pray they try to do what is right and to share God’s love for everyone they meet, particularly those people who seem lonely or sad.

This week, our school has been notified of a student having chickenpox. The disease starts with cold-like symptoms such as a mild fever, headache, runny nose and cough. A day or 2 later a rash begins, starting as small pink blotches but rapidly progressing to itchy blisters which usually last 3 - 4 days before drying out and turning into scabs.
This information is from the Queensland Health website. For more information, please go to Qld Health website.
We thank all our families for keeping the school informed.
