Have you ever been fishing? Fishing can be a topic which polarises people or at least that is my family experience! Half of my family enjoy fishing while the other half won’t step into the boat or eat fish!
My father was an ‘old salt’, even into his eighties he loved to go fishing. Our family holidays were always locations where he could fish. He wasn’t a selfish man, he just loved to fish, a relaxing hobby which commenced in his teenage years.
The love skipped a generation, however, once my father’s fishing mates had returned to God, I became the deckhand – the family boat was really just a glorified tinny!
At this time of year, some children have commenced new friendships while others are just beginning to establish friendships. Fishing and making friends have a lot of in common.
To catch a fish you need the right bait, time and patience. The same can be said about making friends, however, the bait is a little different and it is a matter of spending time to develop the friendship.
Parents can help children catch friends by helping them to understand the need to use the right bait. To make friends you need to use bait such as turn taking, smiling, inviting others to play in a game and by being fair.
Jesus was a great ‘fisher of friends’, kindness was one of his greatest qualities. When you are talking to your child about making friends, focus on the actions and words that your child uses rather than the actions and words of their potential friends. Perhaps some of their friendships will last a lifetime.
Friendships have developed through the many acts of generous deeds and kind words during our recent Townsville disaster, a great example for children and adults alike.
It’s a great time of the year to go fishing!
God bless
Geraldine
This week our Holy Spirit value is responsibility. There are many different ways we talk about and use the word responsibility. There’s being responsible, taking responsibility, acting responsibly and having responsibilities. They are all related to doing the things we are supposed to do and accepting the positive or negative outcome of our actions. Being responsible means our students: think before they act; think about how their actions affect others, think before they speak; are accountable; are reliable; try to fix their mistakes; and most importantly, keep trying. This week we pray that our students try to be more responsible doing the things they are expected to do by being dependable, keeping promises and honouring any commitments they may have.
An email was sent to all our Year Four families to remind all that the last day for registering your child/ren in the Sacramental Programme will be this Friday – 22nd February – for the Holy Spirit Parish Sacramental Programme. Thank you to those families who have responded or contacted the Parish Office. If you are having any problems with downloading the forms, please call the school. Alternatively, Enrolment forms are available at the Holy Spirit Parish Office.
Next Wednesday morning – 27th February, our school community will gather for our Opening Mass. In addition to celebrating the beginning of a new school year, we will commission our student leaders at the end of the Mass. Our Year Six students have a very important role in developing school spirit as leaders and role models to the younger students. The Opening School Mass will commence at 8:45am in the Lynch Family Hall. Everyone is welcome to join us for the Mass as well as a cuppa after the Mass. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Week 4 already! Can you believe it? After a messy start to the year we are settling well into routines and getting down to the business of learning. Something important you may not yet be aware of, is that at HSCS we focus each week on a different value. During week 4 that value is RESPONSIBILITY!
