Dear Parents/Carers
As we have now confirmed our end of year events, I am attaching a calendar to help you organise time for the events you wish to attend.
Best wishes
Kath
It is always fantastic to return to Holy Spirit after a break. You get a real sense of welcome and community from staff, students and families and you know you belong to this community. Thank you to the many 'welcome backs" this week. It made my day. I am very grateful. I am also grateful for Mrs Melanie Albress who took on my role while I was away. She did an amazing job.
This week, we had the group photos taken. MSP Photography will print envelopes for families and these will be handed out when they arrive at school. Families will then be able to purchase photos online. If you have any concerns or questions, MSP Photography has asked for you to contact them directly. Looking forward to seeing the completed photos, as the groups looked amazing.
Next Friday is World Teachers Day. This is a great opportunity to thank the many staff members for their contribution to our school community. A simple " Happy Teachers Day" can make all the difference and start the day going forward. Please take the time to thank a teacher next week.
Happy Days
Paul Martin
Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 18:9-14) tells the story of the sinner who sat in the back of the Temple beating his breast while seeking mercy and the Pharisee who sat up in front reminding God what an impressive and holy person he was. The two men behaved very differently in the temple that day. The Pharisee was proud and thought he was better than other people but the tax collector knew that he wasn't better than other people and that only God could give him the forgiveness and mercy he needed. We encourage our students to care for others and try not to judge others just because they do things differently or have different skills; to try to treat all people with respect and show compassion to those in need.
This week at Holy Spirit we value compassion. What does this mean? It means sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. Compassion gives us the ability to understand someone else's situation and the desire to take action to improve their lives. It is the quality that allows us to step outside of ourselves and see the circumstances of others. It supplies the will power to do what is necessary to make the world a more caring place. What better way can our community show compassion? By supporting Catholic Missions and their good work. On Friday 4th November (Week 5), our school will hold the Mini Fete where proceeds go to Catholic Missions. Information will be shared closer to the date.
ST JOHN PAUL II (Feast Day 22nd October): (1920–2005) The first Polish Pope, John Paul II, was head of the Catholic Church from 1978 until his death in 2005. John Paul II made extraordinary efforts to reach out to people around the world, to both Roman Catholics and those of other faiths. He loved young people and started World Youth Day so youth from all over the world could meet every few years in faith and carry home the message received there to be Christ’s light to the world. ‘I imagined a powerful moment in which the young people of the world could meet Christ, who is eternally young, and could learn from him how to be bearers of the Gospel to other young people.’ I have been fortunate to attend two WYD’s and be part of these extraordinary spiritual events and meet many people from around the world, gathered as one.
Prayer to St John Paul II (adapted)
Oh, St. John Paul, from the window of heaven, grant us your blessing!
Bless the church that you loved and served and guided,
courageously leading it along the paths of the world
in order to bring Jesus to everyone and everyone to Jesus.
Bless the young, who were your great passion.
Help them dream again, help them look up high again
to find the light that illuminates the paths of life here on earth.
May you bless families, bless each family!
St. John Paul, with your prayer, may you protect the family
and every life that blossoms from the family.
Pray for the whole world, which is still marked by tensions, wars and injustice.
You tackled war by invoking dialogue and planting the seeds of love:
pray for us so that we may be tireless sowers of peace.
Oh St. John Paul, from heaven’s window,
where we see you next to Mary,
send God's blessing down upon us all.
Amen.
God bless.

A SPECIAL REPORT: Starting Year 7
Starting Year 7 poses many new challenges, but also offers exciting opportunities. It comes with a number of mixed feelings. Unfortunately for many Grade 6 students, 2020 was marred with school closures and remote learning due to the pandemic and the overall impact of this is still unknown.
For many students regular orientation activities at the end of 2020 were less than ideal. Therefore, many students may be feeling a little bit more anxious than usual about their expectations of starting Year 7. Grasping new skills and establishing new study practices can quickly become daunting and overwhelming.
During this time of transition, parents and carers need to be supportive, but also realistic in their expectations. This is an important milestone in your child’s life. There will be feelings of exhilaration, but also the fear of the unknown. Therefore it will be important for parents and carers to be vigilant in monitoring their child’s mood and mental health during this time. They could easily become overly anxious or even depressed.
In this Special Report, there are a number of strategies offered that can make this transition period smoother and start things off on the right foot!
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Research by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner explores how people with intellectual disability use the internet, and how they experience and deal with online abuse.
The research - How bad should it be before I tell someone?: Online Abuse Experiences of Adult Australians with Intellectual Disability - was commissioned by eSafety to better understand the online experiences of people with intellectual disability and to identify how to support them to have safe, empowering experiences online.
Key findings include:
- Experiences of online abuse are widespread among people with intellectual disability that participated in the research. Abusive behaviour includes online bullying, trolling, doxing and sexual extortion.
- Many adults with intellectual disability don’t recognise online abuse while it is happening.
- Online interactions may be riskier for people with intellectual disability because of their reduced impulse control and varied ability to understand and assess online communication, including the tone of written messages.
- Resources for people with intellectual disability, their carers and service providers need to be in Easy Read format and include real-life online safety examples. They should also present information using both audio-visual formats to encourage better engagement.
The report is based on in-depth interviews and focus groups conducted with adults with intellectual disability, carers and service providers between September and December 2021.
The findings from this research will inform eSafety’s online safety programs, including future interventions to assist people with intellectual disability, their carers and service providers to better identify and look for help for online harms.
We encourage you to read the full research report, our blog post and share this information with your contacts.
