- Our Mission Statement
When times of such conflict arise, to say “no” to young people can sometimes be quite an exclusive statement, if that’s the only response made to their requests. Young people need to be led to make decisions about their lives, so that the predominant message they receive is that the decision was made for their welfare and not purely for the convenience of adults or the fear and lack of trust adults might have towards them.
If young people are encouraged to share in the decision-making with regard to their own activities, then, the accumulated wisdom of their parents, grandparents, teachers and friends can be passed onto them. Then, they are not swept easily along by the influence of media and any new fashionable philosophy that society might throw up from time to time.

Welcome back to the final term of the year. I hope you all had an enjoyable break. This week at Holy Spirit we value mercy. Mercy is all about a combination of compassion and forgiveness. In fact, being merciful involves being compassionate and forgiving when someone else does not deserve it. It is very important to discuss with children what mercy is so they can show it to those around them. This week we pray our students be merciful towards other by encouraging them to show compassion and take the time to show kindness to others.
Catholic Mission began with the vision of one woman. Two-hundred years ago, a young Frenchwoman, Pauline Jaricot, had the vision of an international network of prayer and support for the work of mission. From the commitment of this one woman, the global mission of the Church found sustenance and support. In May 2022 Pauline Jaricot’s
beatification took place, a key milestone on the journey towards being recognised as a saint.
2022 marks the 200th anniversary of the Foundation for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, which in Australia is known as Catholic Mission, and still today a worldwide network of lay missionaries and church leaders are working together with communities most in need.
October is Missions Month. The World Mission Month of October is a time when we can teach our children to respect people from other cultures and reach out to those people, particularly children who live in poverty. It is an opportunity for reflection, prayer and support for the missionary efforts of individuals, communities and the whole Church. This year, students across Australia are encouraged to not only learn about Ethiopia and the work of the Church there, but to do something extraordinary for Mission through the fundraising, advocacy and prayers. For more information, please visit https://www.catholicmission.org.au/
When we look at the world at times, we can see that it is not very fair. Some people have lots of food. Some people don’t have enough. Some people have clean water in their homes. Some people have to walk a long way to collect water for their families. Catholic Missions gives hope to communities so that real changes can be made for people in need around the world. On Friday 4th November, our school will hold our annual Mini Fete where all proceeds go to Catholic Missions. More information will be given in our next newsletter and by teachers closer to the date.
The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. The feast of the Holy Rosary was established by Pope Saint Pius V on the anniversary of the naval victory won by the Christian fleet at Lepanto, October 7, 1571. The victory was attributed to the help of the Mother of God whose aid was invoked by praying the Rosary. This month we are encouraged to pray the Rosary to make a request to God, to thank God for blessings received or for requesting a special favour, for example if someone is sick to help them recover.
Welcome back to Term 4 and God bless.

eSafety research shows that a third of children have looked for emotional support online from friends or mental health support services.
Learn more about how games, apps and social media can influence young people’s wellbeing with eSafety’s Digital technologies and mental health webinar.
The webinar is designed for parents and carers of children aged 10-18 and covers a range of topics including:
- the latest research on young people and time online
- steps to take if your child is exposed to distressing or harmful content
- the strategies young people can use to support friends online.

Talking to young people about their experiences online
Young people may be exposed to upsetting or harmful content online. They also may not understand the best way to get support.
eSafety’s advice on ‘hard-to-have conversations’ can help you navigate sensitive topics and build an open dialogue with your child about what they are experiencing online.
Take a few minutes to read the advice and let the young people in your care know they can come to you with anything.

World Mental Health Day 10 October 2022
This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to consider how you can have safer, more positive experiences online.
While the online world helps us learn, work and share, it also poses risks to our physical and mental wellbeing. This can be particularly true for young people.
Explore the Look after your mental health Australia site with your family for ways to get involved and simple tips for protecting and improving mental wellbeing – online and offline.
We are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8am-8.25am in the hall.
Your support with donations of spreads (not nut based) and bread are needed and appreciated, due to the increase in children accessing the program.
Donations can be dropped off at Tuckshop.
Thank you to those who continue to support the program.
Year 6 - preparing for high school
The group will aim to assist students with preparing for high school by normalising feelings associated with this change and addressing questions and concerns about high school (including friendships, timetables, and exploring strategies for organisation). Although facilitated by Tegan, this informal small group setting will allow students the opportunity to share and learn from each other.
If you are interested in your child participating, please contact your child's classroom teacher by the 14th of October.

A SPECIAL REPORT: Building Belonging Post Pandemic
Having a sense of belonging involves more than simply knowing other people. It is also focused on gaining acceptance, attention and support from others, as well as having the opportunity to provide the same to other people.
When the pandemic interrupted our lives and changed the way we live, this meant that suddenly many of our young people's main sources of connection with peers and extended family members was removed overnight without warning. As human beings, we have a basic emotional and biological need for connection. It provides us with feelings of identity, security, support, acceptance and community.
Students who have a sense of belonging will experience these feelings which in turn supports their academic, psychological and social development. When young people come together again after a period of instability, there is a period of adjustment. Whilst the rules of the group may be established, acceptance remains paramount and can therefore mean some behaviours become far from rational, making it difficult for their brain to focus on things, such as learning. All these factors combined, leave young people open to being vulnerable. It can sometimes tempt them into making choices or becoming involved in situations they might not ordinarily consider.
As a result of the pandemic, there are still many young people struggling to connect and regain their sense of belonging. This Special Report provides guidance to families who find themselves in this situation.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Get to know us before you need us: Meet David
To the people of Townsville and non-locals who follow this newsletter, it’s been a pleasure to work with you this year. For those who don’t know me, I’m Major David Long, your Army Military Support Officer for NQ/FNQ. I joined the Army as a ‘wet behind the ears’ 17 year old straight out of school Officer Cadet at ADFA almost two decades ago and have enjoyed my time mostly doing logistics and exercise planning with many diverse teams.
My role in the DMFS Townsville office is to support serving ADF personnel (including all the ‘singlies’) and your families by: being a conduit to units and the chain of command, assisting units to provide you holistic welfare to improve your quality of life, providing policy and ADF culture advice to the Defence Social Workers, being a translator for ADF jargon, do what the Family Liaison Officer tells me to do (like write this blurb) plus support the Education Liaison Officer and Defence School Mentors where I can.
It's an extremely rewarding role and I’ll echo the sentiment of all the Army Military Support Officers I talk to – best job I’ve ever had. . .
Warm regards,
Major David Long.
