- Our Mission Statement
This week, will the chatter in our playgrounds, homes and carparks be the Fete or NAPLAN? While I suspect there will be little of both, I believe most of the children’s conversation will centre on the Fete.
Over the next two weeks, children across the country will participate in NAPLAN – the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be working online to complete all tests with the exception of Year 3 Writing, which will be a paper test. While the students are prepared and most will take it in their stride, it is important that we, the adults do not create unnecessary anxiety for students.
NAPLAN is a series of four tests which will assess a student’s performance at a particular point in time. The NAPLAN results for our school will provide data to assist us with future curriculum planning.
Congratulations to our students for the way they engaged with the test materials!
Thank you to the parents and family members who have volunteered to work on stalls on Friday evening. We are still in need of volunteers and I hope you can respond to our need.
The parent response to requests for selling dodgers, grocery and Tombola items has been more than generous, our last request is for an hour of your time.
Please find the Fete volunteer form here.
We are grateful that it looks like fine weather for this week. I hope to see you at the fete!
God bless the volunteers!

This weekend is the Ascension of the Lord. Jesus showed himself to the eleven and
said to them, ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the good news to all creation…’ Then He was taken up into Heaven. This Feast assures us Jesus is still with us and we are called to recognise His presence in the goodness, love and forgivess of the community and in the great and small miracles of life.
This week at Holy Spirit we value generosity. Generosity has been described as: “ready to give freely, unselfish, free from smallness or pettiness of mind or character:” Generosity is simple, kind and readily available. It's about giving 100% even when you don't have to. It's about treating people the way you'd want to be treated. Everyone loves being around generous people. There is something so special about generous people that brings life, joy, empowerment and freedom into the atmosphere when they turn up. We can teach our children to live a life of generosity whether they are financially secure or not. They don’t have to wait to have an income and our generosity doesn’t have to be limited by our income. The only thing that limits our generosity is our mindset and our character.
This Friday night is our fete. What better way to show that the value of generosity is alive and well at Holy Spirit as we offer our time and assistance. Thank you to all our families and friends who will be helping in any way to make our fete a success this year.
This weekend, students in the Holy Spirit Parish Sacramental Programme will attend their final workshop following Mass. Everyone is invited to come along and join the students and be part of the Mass.
God bless.

Watching your child or young person manage their nervous moments can
be challenging for parents, but it comes with the territory. How you react
to an anxiety-inducing moment can influence the way kids approach
uncomfortable situations in the future.
Sadly, avoidance is a well-entrenched pattern of behaviour that holds
many kids back from experiencing life as they would like. The comfort
zone that many crave to stay in can be like maximum security prison
where there’s no escape. It’s incumbent upon parents to make sure
participation rather than avoidance becomes the most likely response
even when kids feel nervous and tense.
Holding firm in the face of resistance
Recently, Melanie, a mother of four, told me how she approached her
teenage daughter’s nervousness about taking a part-time job. Fifteen-
year-old Chloe, a quiet, thoughtful, studious girl wanted a job but was too
nervous to go for an interview. Melanie took a firm stance with her
daughter and insisted that she go for the job interview, despite some
incredibly strong resistance.
Melanie said, “I drove Chloe to the interview. She was so nervous that
she was shaking. As we got closer Chloe begged me not to make her do
it. I felt so sorry for her, but I wouldn’t let her off the hook. I knew that if
she wouldn’t do this then she’d always avoid the things that make her
nervous. I told her that there was no option. This is something she had to
do.”
Chloe was successful with the job interview. The first thing she did when
she got home was to thank Melanie for holding her ground and insisting
that she go for the interview.
Making decisions in a child’s best interests
There’s a natural tendency for kids to avoid doing activities where they
may fail, struggle or even risk being laughed at. At such times, parents
who can see the bigger picture need to make decisions for their child to
prevent the development of negative patterns of behaviour that are so
difficult to break. It takes significant parental sensitivity and courage to
avoid taking anxiety-inducing activities temporarily away from a child or
teenager. But it’s the right thing to do if developing a child’s confidence,
rather than their feelings of helplessness is your goal.
Melanie’s daughter still feels nervous before she goes to work, but the
nerves are getting less each time. Importantly, her courage account is
being filled along with her bank account each time she heads off to work.
You should never underestimate value of a little parenting push,
particularly if anxiety tends to be your child’s constant companion.
