Have you heard the saying ‘The honeymoon is over?’ The beginning of the school year can be a little like that. As the routines become established, the excitement of the prospects of a new year can wane for students, teachers and parents alike.
We have all heard the stories of prep students who after a few days have decided they don’t need to go to school anymore and there is no surprise in knowing how that ended.
How we, the adults, model resilience is one of the most important features of helping children to build resilience. Admitting and owning our mistakes as well as discussing what we will do in the future are valuable lessons for students. It is equally important to allow children to make mistakes and see the consequences of their actions. Frequently we can rush in to solve the problem, we need to hit the pause button and allow children to problem solve - a great skill for life!
This year we are participating in The Resilience Project. In January all members of the staff attended training for this project. Our students will receive a workbook of lessons to use in the classroom, the cost of which has been covered by funds raised through events such as the Fete. For more information there will be a presentation for parents later this year.
Last week, parents attended CAFE (Community and Friends Engagement) and Class and Community Connect (formerly Contact) meetings. The minimal opportunity for parents to meet in 2020 was highlighted at the CAFE meeting. As a result, Year One parents and carers are invited to a ‘Meet and Greet’ followed by classroom activities this Friday, 12 February. We are looking forward to holding similar events for other year levels.
CAFE and CCCs are great ways to engage with members of the school community as well as learn about upcoming events in our school.
This week our School Board Members also met. Thank you to all who generously give time for the benefit of our students - that’s the Strength in the Spirit!
God bless,
Geraldine
I would like to take this opportunity to remind our families about before and after school supervision. A teacher is on duty from 8am in Bibi Goo Yumba (Prep-Yr3) and the Hall ( Yr 4- Yr6). Students will then move towards their classroom at 8.15 when the second bell rings. ANY STUDENTS ARRIVING BEFORE 8AM NEED TO GATHER IN BIBI GOO YUMBA UNTIL THE SUPERVISING TEACHER BEGINS AT 8AM.
Albert St:
The afternoon supervision begins at 2.50 and students can move to either Albert St (down the service road) to gather near the tree.
Hatchett St:
The Hatchett St pick up zone is where an admin person will call over the PA system to students gathered in the Hall. They will move promptly when they are called.
Church:
Students gather in the covered area of the Church and are supervised by a teacher. A second teacher patrols the crossing to ensure the safety of the pedestrians. A third staff member will call family names so students can make their way to the pick up zone for a safe departure.
Thank you to those families that have a 'family name' sign in the windscreen so staff can call students over a PA system and students can move quickly to the safe pick up zones. It is important that drivers adhere to road rules eg. speed zones and not lining up blocking traffic. Please be aware that no car should block any driveway ( and this includes the driveway of our neighbours).
We thank you for your assistance to keep our families, including yourselves, safe.
Get in the Spirit
Paul Martin
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus cures a leper. In Biblical times, lepers lived in a miserable state, left to fend for themselves outside towns and villages, feared and segregated from others. It was against the law to associate with them. Jesus is moved to compassion for the leper and he reaches out his hand to him in love and compassion. At Holy Spirit, we encourage our students to live the values of compassion and care for others in their daily interactions; cooperating, being fair and respectful and caring for each other so everyone stays safe in all their games and activities.
This week at Holy Spirit Catholic School, we value respect. Having respect for someone means you think good things about who a person is or how he or she acts. Respect also means that you accept somebody for who they are, even when they are different from you or you don’t agree with them. We often use the value of respect in schools when we are speaking with children and how they treat others. We reinforce that showing respect to someone means they act in a way that shows they care about their feelings and well-being. This week we pray that our students show respect for others by thinking and acting in a way that shows others they care about their feelings and their well-being, not calling others names, treating each other with courtesy and caring about themselves.
In this week’s newsletter, families will find information in relation to the Holy Spirit Parish Sacramental Programme. The Sacramental Programme is open to all students in Grade 4, 5 and 6. If you are intending your child/ren to participate in this year’s programme, please download the necessary forms and return to the Parish Office. If you are having any problems with downloading the forms, please call the school. Alternatively, enrolment forms are available at the Holy Spirit Parish Office. Registration is open until 26th February.
Next Tuesday, 16th February, is Shrove Tuesday. In ancient times, this was a day of celebration, when there were processions and people feasted together before they entered a time of fasting and prayer during Lent. Today, many still follow this tradition by eating pancakes. This is associated with the ancient custom of eating the last supplies of milk, flour and eggs before the beginning of Lent. This year the Caritas Project Compassion Appeal Launch which will be taking place at St Catherine’s Catholic College, Proserpine.
Lent also begins next week with Ash Wednesday on the 17th February. Our Grade 4 to 6 students will be attending Mass in the Church with Fr John at 9am and our P-3 students will have a Liturgy in the Lynch Family Hall at 8:40am.
Project Compassion is Caritas Australia's annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal. Millions of Australians come together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. This year’s theme is “Be More”. Over the coming weeks, a feature story from the Caritas Australia website will be shared. We encourage our families to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Each family will receive a Project Compassion box and/or a set of envelopes for their donations or you can donate online via their website at https://lent.caritas.org.au
God bless.
