“All children are capable of extraordinary things. There is no happiness gene, no success gene, and no ‘doer of extraordinary things’ gene.” This quote from Karen Young formed part of the introduction by child psychologist, Dr. Tracey Walker.
Earlier this term, our school was fortunate to host Dr. Jo Lukins and Dr. Tracey Walker as guest speakers for parents and teachers across Townsville.
Tracey reminded those present that resilience is being able to bounce back from stress, challenge, obstacles, tragedy, trauma or adversity.
When children are resilient, they are braver, more curious, more adaptable, and more able to extend their reach into the world.
Dr. Jo Lukins, psychologist made a key point that children learn and even imitate our reactions to life’s challenges, from the tiny annoyances that present from day to day to the more significant trials that life throws at us.
Many of us have encountered situations when we see an adult losing self-control, our news is inundated with examples. Children are not raised in isolation. Modelling coping strategies is a great gift that parents, teachers and significant adults can give to our children.
The following two minute video from Center on Developing Child – Harvard University gives a brief overview on How Resilience is Built.

Are you asking your child to step up?
We do a lot for our kids, because we love them and often they need us. But we forget that one of the best things we can do for our kids is to help them learn to do for themselves and for others.
Please find the full article in PDF belowIf we are really determined to do something, even though it might be difficult, then we can succeed. It is not easy to live as a Christian. In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus gives examples where wise men and leaders think about the ‘cost’ of their actions before they actually proceed with a decision. For us this means he wants us to think carefully about what is expected of us if we are to be his disciples: to love one another; to keep God’s rules; to be kind and forgiving and all the other qualities of being truly Christian.
This week at Holy Spirit, we value humility. Humility is the quality of having a modest or low view of our own importance. It is the ability to be humble, to take care of others and not putting yourself first. This week we pray that our students show humility by: being silent, being in control, serving others happily, learning from mistakes and having a gentle heart. We are continually reminding student’s to think before they act and to always act when there is a need and what better way to do this than with humility.
“Humility is the mother of all virtues; purity, charity and obedience. It is in being humble that our love becomes real, devoted and ardent. If you are humble nothing will touch you, neither praise nor disgrace, because you know what you are. If you are blamed you will not be discouraged. If they call you a saint you will not put yourself on a pedestal.” - Saint Teresa of Calcutta
Clergy Foundation Appeal
Thank you to those families for your generosity and support of last week’s annual Clergy Foundation Appeal. The Clergy Foundation currently support six retired Priests in the Townsville Diocese and they thank you for your support. Your donations will allow the Diocese to provide for a basic lifestyle for these Priests who have ministered across the Diocese over many years and some still do. You can still donate by collecting an envelope from the Parish Office or contact the Diocesan Office.
God bless.

Here at HSCS we love looking after the environment!
4B have been collecting bottle tops for the program 'Lids 4 Kids'.
The bottle tops will be donated to Envision an Australian non-for-profit organisation who trains disadvantaged people to use 3D printers to make mobility aids for child amputees.
So far the children have washed, sorted and counted over 4000 bottle tops! Wow!
Special thanks to Cooper Duvel for his enormous donation of lids. Please bring your washed bottle tops to 4B to be donated to 'Lids 4 Kids'.
New Childcare Agency for the Townsville Diocese
Most Rev. Timothy Harris, Bishop of Townsville has announced a new Diocesan Agency to stand alongside its other agencies such as Townsville Catholic Education and Centacare.
The new agency is likely to be called Mary MacKillop Childcare N.Q and will be responsible for the governance and administration of Outside School Hours Care, Kindergartens and Long Day Care Centres.
For the children and their families using these services, the high quality childcare services will continue and it will be business as usual at all the various centres.
Bishop Tim noted the capacity to provide an effective childcare service will now transfer seamlessly to one overall diocesan childcare entity.
Bishop Tim also announced the appointment of Mrs Alana Crouch as the interim agency head, and said the change would come in to effect from early 2020.

Round 1 of FairPlay vouchers is opens
Previously Get Started Vouchers. There have been a few changes to the voucher program with the release of Queensland Government's new sport and active recreation strategy - Activate! Queensland 2019-2029.
Activate! Queensland is the new strategy to ensure physical activity can be prioritised in the lives of all Queenslanders, providing quality infrastructure and increasing opportunities to participate and collaborate in local communities where it is needed most.
Over the next 10 years, Activate! Queensland will assist individuals and communities to address the barriers that prevent or limit participation. The strategy aims to achieve lifelong participation through improving physical literacy in the early years and promoting more opportunities to be physically active within communities.
FairPlay vouchers is one of the initiatives of Activate! Queensland. FairPlay replaces the program formerly known as Get Started Vouchers.
Round 1 of FairPlay vouchers opened on Wednesday 31 July 2019.
What is the program about?
Parents, carers or guardians can apply for a voucher valued up to $150 for their child or young person, which can be used towards membership, registration or participation fees with registered Activity Providers which Tennis Townsville is one.
There is a limit of one voucher per child/young person per calendar year. If a child received a voucher in Round 13 of Get Started Vouchers (February 2019) they will not be eligible for another voucher until Round 2 of FairPlay vouchers in January 2020.
Who is eligible to apply?
Eligible applicants are Queensland children and young people aged 5 to 17 (inclusive) who either:
- hold or whose parent/carer/guardian holds a valid Department of Human Services Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card with the child’s name on it; or
- are identified by a registered referral agent; or
- as part of a limited trial, families with a combined household annual income of less than $55,000, who do not hold a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, can register an expression of interest for a FairPlay voucher from 31 July 2019.
What has changed?
Clubs are now being referred to as 'Activity Providers' as the eligibility has opened up to not-for-profit community organisations, like Tennis a Townsville, who provide structured physical activity as part of their programs. This means that the club locator will now be referred to as the Activity Provider directory AYou may also want to ‘like’ the Queensland Sport and Recreation Facebook page
If you have any queries please email us at fairplayvouchers@npsr.qld.gov.
Thank you for your involvement in the FairPlay vouchers program, empowering Queenslanders to get moving, more often.
Yours sincerely
