What a wonderful time of year to be in Townsville, perfect weather and a plethora of free activities such as Strand Ephemera, Halo and concerts!
This week, we celebrate Catholic Education Week. Catholic education, challenges students through the message of Jesus to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, members of society who are not only highly skilled but compassionate with a strong sense of social justice.
Catholic schools seek to provide high quality education and to make a difference in the lives of individuals and in the wider community.
Our school recognises the significant input of parents, and as such, we aim to support our students as stated in our School Mission Statement: Inspired by Gospel Values and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we nurture a love of learning, respect and service in an environment of generosity. At the Catholic Education Week Mass on Monday, past student, Connor Whiteside (Year 12, IPC), received the Deus Caritas Est Award. The award recognises outstanding secondary students who, by words and actions, show a love for God, others and self. While there are many influences in Connor's life it is wonderful to see his success and claim him as a past student, congratulations Connor!
During our Catholic Education Week Liturgy today, we recognised the following staff and community members for their contribution to our school community.
Kirsten Logan, Amber Church, Ann Wuth, Sue Laing, Maureen Crimeen, Mary Kerrisk, Rose McSherry, Lucy Johnston and Fr John.
Our 50 Year Anniversary celebrations also take place this week with a roll call at 3 pm on Saturday afternoon, the opening of the time capsule and the evening celebration of Holy Spirit Under the Stars! I hope you are able to attend all or some of the celebrations!
On Wednesday and Thursday students across North Queensland will attend the annual Challenge Games at the Sports Reserve.
The focus of the Challenge Games is participation! Over two days, our students will compete in a variety of events, however, the highlight for many will be the disco on Wednesday evening!
Happy Days
The Lord’s Prayer is a wonderful prayer of praise and reconciliation. In Sunday’s reading (Luke 11:1-13), Jesus teaches the disciples to pray the Lord’s Prayer. “Lord, teach us to pray.” This is what the disciples asked Him. Of course, any answer coming from Him would be a perfect answer. His answer was what we call the “Our Father” or the “Lord’s Prayer.” This prayer is a perfect model of how we should pray and for what things we should pray and in what order. The Lord really did answer the request to teach them how to pray. The Our Father teaches us the goal of prayer, the means of prayer and the obstacles to be overcome.
This week at Holy Spirit we value excellence. Excellence often refers to greatness, the very best. Achieving excellence is a very difficult thing to do at times. It is a quality that people really appreciate, because it is so hard to find. Striving for excellence is trying to do our best at whatever task we set our minds to do. At Holy Spirit, staff are always looking for ways to help students achieve excellence. This week, during Catholic Education Week, we pray that our students draw upon their many skills and show excellence in a given area.
This week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. Yesterday, our Term 3 Leaders attended the Catholic Education Week Mass at the Cathedral. It was celebrated with schools from across the Diocese and presided by Bishop Tim.

National Vocations Awareness Week
Today is the feast of St John Vianney, the patron of parish clergy. Pray for your priests today in thanksgiving for their ministry and presence in your community. Next Thursday is the feast of St Mary of the Cross McKillop, our first Australia saint. Pray for the religious who do so much in pastoral care, education, health care and many other ministries. Pray also that these saints may inspire many vocations to consecrated life and priesthood, especially from your community.

Catholic Education Week
Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across Queensland from 28 July – 3 August 2019. This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day. The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Many Voices. One Spirit.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. There are 306 Catholic schools in Queensland and 30 schools in our Diocese that educate around 149,000 students and employ more than 20,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.
