A gathering of friends, betrayal, love, suffering, sacrifice, despair and finally good news and joy! Does this sound like the plot of a familiar story? It is, it is the greatest story ever told and this Friday night our senior students will present the story of Jesus, from the Last Supper to Easter Sunday in a prayer form known as Stations of the Cross.
The Stations of the Cross is a traditional form of prayer throughout the season of Lent. The Holy Spirit actors and choir have spent the past few weeks preparing for the dramatisation of the Stations of the Cross. All are welcome to join us in the Lynch Family Hall on Friday, 29 March at 7 pm.
Thank you to Mrs Cathy Noye and Mrs Angela Hallam for preparing the actors and Mrs Sue Laing and Mrs Maureen Crimeen for training our choir.
This week we welcome back our APRE, Miss Caroline Fuller. Miss Fuller has been on sabbatical leave, attending a Religious Education Conference. We are looking forward to Miss Fuller’s return.
Thank you to Ms Begona Bengoa, Ms Allyson Buchanan and Mrs Kristy Bates for their assistance in Admin during Miss Fuller’s absence.
Wow! What a week we have had. From Bullying No way! week to inter-school sport preparations for stations of the cross, Life Education lessons, success in the pool for our swim team, Harmony Day and visits from Father John. Just another successful week here at Holy Spirit.
Naplan is heading our way in May. The schedule for Holy Spirit is a little different this year. We are completing these national tests over 2 weeks. The schedule is found here
We recommend students in Year 3 and 5 have a mouse and headphones for their tests. You can visit the public demonstration site to view the sample tests to get an idea how the test is structured. This site is linked here. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher or see myself. We are happy to help and take the stress out of Naplan for you.
Our annual Fun Run is being held on the last day April 5 in the morning. This is great occasion to see who will be the champion house for 2019. If you can assist with being a course marshall, please contact the office or myself. The students love it when families help out in the school environment.
Happy Days
This week at Holy Spirit, we value empathy. This is seen in how we understand or feel what another person is experiencing – by being able to place oneself in another’s position. Empathy can be shown by students in showing others that they care about and are sorry about someone else’s troubles, grief or misfortune. During this time of Lent, we encourage children to show empathy to others by being conscious another person’s perspective or point of view.
This week's feature story is 100% LOVE with Salma from Bangladesh.
Salma lives with her husband, Masud, in the rural community of Gazipur, two hours from Bangladesh’s bustling capital.
She was just 18 years old, pregnant and fearful for her life and that of her unborn child, when she featured in Project Compassion 2013.
In Bangladesh, maternal and infant mortality rates are still tragically high. During her first pregnancy, Salma was very sick, she experienced abdominal pain and couldn’t eat. She sought the help of a midwife called Pronoti, trained by Caritas Australia’s Safe Motherhood Program.
Pronoti helped Salma safely through two pregnancies, thanks to her comprehensive training in midwifery, antenatal and postnatal care.
The program has reduced maternal and infant mortality in the area by almost 70 percent. Over 400 women have been trained in midwifery since 2008 – and they have given over 28,000 women antenatal checkups and delivered more than 15,000 babies.
Now 24, Salma smiles as she watches her one-year-old boy and six-year-old daughter play together. She is pleased that they are growing up strong and can focus on their hopes for the future.
“If the Safe Motherhood Program had not trained midwives like Pronoti, many of us would have to go to the private clinics 11 kilometres away. Some of us women and our babies might die because of that.”
“We are poor and so it is easy to get discouraged about the future. However, if we have hope, we have the courage to try and do things that seem difficult or impossible at the time.”
This Friday night, a number Year 5 and 6 students will be presenting Stations of the Cross. The students have put in a fantastic effort and we look forward to seeing them on the night. The children are certainly to be congratulated for their efforts.
The tally will be collected each week and will be given at assembly.

ANZAC Day March - Expressions of Interest
Students should be assembled at the assembly area along the edge of the road near Strand Park by 8.15am. As students will be waiting for a minimum of 45 minutes (possibly up to an hour), it is advisable that children bring a disposable water bottle as they will not march with water bottles. Water will be available at ANZAC Park.
The parade will process along The Strand to the ANZAC Park Cenotaph. Parents may collect children once we reach ANZAC Park.
Children should wear the formal uniform (not sports uniform) and their red hats and black shoes are a must.
Could you please contact the office if your child is interested in being part of this.
