- Our Mission Statement
As was mentioned in the newsletter last week, Holy Spirit Day was a huge success. I am happy to report that prizes started going home today as we presented some of the major prizes at the assembly today. Congratulations to Zara for raising the most at Holy Spirit. Marica and Khazana were the next best fundraisers.
This coming Friday is our annual Athletics Carnival that will see Branagan Blues, Stephen Whites and the Arnold Reds do battle to be crowned 2023 Champions. Best of luck to everybody and as we say in the Arnold Red team; 'Give it a Red hot go'! Thank you to the many parents helpers that have volunteered to assist on the day and to our organising committee; Bravo!
With just over a week till the holidays, I would like to wish all our families a safe and relaxing break. Take time to enjoy these special times with family, stay safe and we look forward to another successful term, starting back on Monday 10 July.
I have been fortunate enough to meet with new families looking for a school for their preps in 2024. I’ve enjoyed meeting these little people, some shy, looking at me from behind mums and dads, others energetic and eager to chat, but all excited to look around the ‘big school’. One of my questions is, ‘Why have you chosen Holy Spirit?’ The answer from new families has been similar, in that many people they have come across in the community have told them that Holy Spirit is a wonderful school and has a reputation for nurturing, teaching and instilling the values that help raise kind and respectful children. This makes me proud to be a part of our Holy Spirit family.
On Tuesday evening, we were represented at the annual Reader’s Cup by a group of avid readers. Although we didn’t place, the students have told me they enjoyed the experience, learning from the other participants and enjoying the games on the night. Thank you, Ms Prinsen, for coordinating.
Thursday and Friday our students will demonstrate their sporting prowess. This Thursday will see the start of Season 2 sports for Grades 5 and 6. Our teams of Football (Soccer) players and Touch players will represent our school against other schools in our district. Good luck teams! Our Interhouse Athletics Carnival is finally upon us. Friday will see all grades run the ‘red track’. Our students get to experience the same running track that our elite sportsman practice and race on, which is super exciting. I look forward to seeing the big smiles and the resilience of our students as they join in the races and events on the day.
Regards
Nicole Lennox
This week at Holy Spirit we value service. Service, by definition, means doing something for others. The motive for our service is supposed to be love. Our love for God is proved in our love for others, so the quality of our service is a direct reflection of our love for others. This week we pray for our students and family members to continue their kind acts towards others to have a positive influence on those around them.
Saint Teresa of Calcutta reminds us to seek ‘the face of God in everything, everyone, all the time and his hand in every happening; this is what it means to be contemplative in the heart of the world. Seeing and adoring the presence of Jesus, especially in the lowly appearance of bread, and in the distressing disguise of the poor’.
As we approach the colder months of the year, there are many in need of blankets and other everyday items that we take for granted. Vinnies Refugee Assistance Program (VRAP) is looking for winter blankets and doonas to donate to refugee families in Townsville. Donations can be dropped into the Vinnies Donation Hub, Woodham Court West End. For more information phone 4430 4002 or email vrap@svdpqld.org.au. This is a simple way to help and be of service to others. Your generosity is always appreciated.
This Friday, 16th June, is the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion dates back to the Middle Ages and recalls the mystery of God who is love and honours the heart of Jesus as the source and center of the incarnate love of God. Jesus’ sacred heart is often portrayed as a flaming heart, shining with divine light, reminding us of the incredible fire of Christ’s love for us.
God bless.

Child grooming and unwanted contact
Socialising online can be a great way for children to build friendships, but it can also put them at risk.
Unwanted contact is any type of online communication that your child finds unpleasant or upsetting, or that leads them into a situation where they may be unsafe. This can happen even if they initially welcomed the contact. It can come from strangers, online ‘friends’ your child has not met face-to-face, or from someone they actually know.
Parents and carers can find information about:
- What is grooming?
- How to deal with unwanted contact
- How does online grooming happen?
- How can I protect my child?
- What to do if something goes wrong, including how to report it

A SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
