On Sunday we commenced the Church season of Advent. Last week, our students in Prep to Year 2 reminded us through their liturgies that Advent is a time of waiting.
Recently, I gathered with friends for a pre-Christmas catch up, as we waited for our meal, we shared information about family members and our plans for Christmas. At a nearby table, sat a young couple also waiting for their meal but heavily focused on their phones.
It has become common for many of us that while we wait we use our phones to catch up on emails, check diaries and the like. I am often appreciative of the waiting time to do just that, but what do we miss? Sometimes it is the opportunity to engage with someone nearby and perhaps even learn something new.
I once was waiting in Grand Central Station in New York. While my fellow traveller checked in on Facebook, I chatted to a woman who informed me that for $5 we could be escorted to our train, board and be seated, prior to other passengers boarding the train – money well spent!
Advent is an opportunity to wait, reflect on the coming of the Christ child and engage with God through those around us.
Each year, the school historian collects the stories of the school year to capture our history. This year we will have an electronic version which we will make available to families. Perhaps if you have some waiting time you might like to reflect on the past twelve months.
Thank you for your contribution to our school community throughout 2018, if you have shared some good news about our school or promoted us through Facebook or helped us in any aspect of school life your effort is appreciated.
Wishing you joy and peace this Christmas, God bless!
Geraldine

Thank you for your support at our end of year Carols by Torchlight. Our students were in fine voice under the guidance of music teachers, Mrs Sue Laing and Mrs Maureen Crimeen. Even the very warm weather couldn’t dampen the smiles as our students shared with Santa their Christmas list.
Well done to our staff members who supervised and corralled the very excited students as they prepared for their items. It was wonderful to see so many families relaxing and enjoying the evening!

Handling a teenager's outburst
by Michael Grose
How would you respond to this parenting challenge - a teenager's outburst? You are a parent of a 15 year old boy and you don’t want to him to go to a Saturday night party. He puffs out his chest, curls his lip and barks “You’re kidding. You can’t make me stay home tonight. No way!”
Here are some tips that seem logical in the calm light of day, but can be hard to implement in the heat of the moment.
Preparing for High School Webinar

Christmas Eve 6pm Mass To make this year's Holy Spirit Christmas Eve Mass special for our children and families, we invite every child to come to the Mass dressed as an angel, shepherd, wise men or indeed anything that depicts the joy and beauty of the birth of Jesus Christ. Children will be invited to sing special Carols before Mass then join the entrance procession with Father John. At the end of Mass, Father will be delighted to present to each child a candy cane in celebration
Parents, it is essential that you advise the office if your child is going to be absent. This can be done by emailing absent@hsstsv.catholic.edu.au or via the skoolbag app.

Carols at The Cathedral
The 11th annual ‘Carols at the Cathedral’ will take place on Friday, the 14th of December starting at 7:00pm with a candlelight procession.
This beautiful event is based on the traditional ceremony of carols and readings telling the story of Christ’s coming into the world. Bishop Tim will give a short homily during the evening and a collection will be taken (this year’s collection goes to the drought appeal). The evening concludes with supper.
The Diocesan Choir made up of singers from all the Townsville parishes will lead the congregation’s singing of much-loved carols as well as presenting special choral pieces.
