- Our Mission Statement
The Holy Spirit Colour Me Crazy Run was a wonderful event for our school community last Sunday.
There are many discussions around parent engagement in schools. I am grateful for the number of parents who volunteered prior to or on the day of the event. One family whose child was unable to run due to an injury, still assisted that morning, a great example of parent engagement!
Meetings for CAFE (Parents and Friends), Indigenous Parents Reference Group and Class and Community Contacts all occur this week. The parents involved in these groups respond to various school and student needs. They plan and organise events, all are great examples of parent engagement.
Last week, a group of parents attended the Challenge Games, again engaging with their child in school activities assisting and supporting students and our staff members.
Thank you to all who made our Colour Run a success, especially the staff who planned and organised the event. Well done to Mr Martin and the Colour Run Team! The event raised just under $3000 dollars. Some of the funds raised will be donated to the Rural Fire Brigade for their assistance on the day. If you are keen to be part of the decision making in regard to allocating funds raised by parents, don’t hesitate to attend the next CAFE Meeting, Monday, 6 September - all are welcome!
Student Protection Concerns
Many parents will have concerns which occurred last week regarding the news reports about past staff member, Mr. Justen Orford.
I have been asked by Jacqui Francis, Executive Director, Townsville Catholic Education, in the event that your child discloses any information related to this matter, to contact the Townsville Catholic Education Office directly. If you have any concerns for the safety and wellbeing of your child/children, please contact their Student Protection team at studentprotection@tsv.catholic.edu.au or phone Townsville Catholic Education 47730900.
God bless,
Geraldine
Wow! What a fantastic week of spirit community. We started celebrating Catholic Education Week, participated in the Challenge Games and finished off with a Colour Me Crazy Fun Day. During this week, it was really evident the support our students have; from parents and families, staff and parish.
Thank you to the many volunteers last Sunday who gave of their time and skills to assist with the running of the Colour Me Crazy. It was an awesome day and a tremendous way to finish our week at Holy Spirit. If you get a chance, go to our Facebook page and view the smiling faces of students and families. Thank you to our amazing staff who continue to support our school outside the classroom. The Spirit Way in action!

This Sunday, 8th August, we celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross, Australia’s
first Saint, Mary MacKillop. Mary Helen MacKillop was born in Fitzroy, Melbourne on January 15, 1842. Together with Fr Tenison Woods, Mary founded the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph in 1867, an Order dedicated to the education of poor children. Mary faced many challenges, not least of which was her (questionable) excommunication by Bishop Shiel in September 1871 – an excommunication lifted five months later. By 1891, there were three hundred sisters working in nine dioceses in Australia and New Zealand. An ordinary Australian woman, yet a woman of heroic holiness, goodness, warmth and determination, Mary died on August 8, 1909. On October 17, 2010, Mary MacKillop – Saint Mary of the Cross, was declared a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI. One of her best-known sayings is ‘Never see a need without doing something about it!’ Visit: http://www.marymackillop.org.au/
This week at Holy Spirit Catholic School, we value respect. Having respect for someone means you think good things about who a person is or how he or she acts. We reinforce that showing respect to someone is to act in a way that shows they care about others feelings and well-being. This week we pray that our students show respect for others by thinking and acting in a way that shows others they care about their feelings and their well-being, to see a need and do something about it.
Friday, August the 6th, is the day the Church celebrates the Transfiguration of the Lord. This unique event in the Gospel occurred when Jesus took his three closest companions, Peter, James and John, up a mountain and was transfigured: ‘His face shone like the sun and his clothes became as dazzling as light.’ This event is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. There is more on the Transfiguration at: http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15019a.htm
God bless.
