Congratulations to our past students who completed their high school education last week! In the past few weeks, I have attended three Awards’ Nights and it is impressive to see the achievements of our past students.
Usually I sit with other primary principals and it becomes a little competitive, as we claim past
students as they appear on stage to receive their award. I can only imagine how proud the parents and other family members feel when they hear the name of their son or daughter, who may not have been an ‘award winning’ student in their younger years. I know I often feel like standing and applauding the student!
Earlier this term I met a past parent, having taught two of their four children, now young adults, I inquired after them. The daughter who was a quiet achiever is still achieving, the son who endured some challenges at school (as did his teacher and parents) had struggled after school but with time, maturity and the continual love and support of family is ‘on par’ with his sister. Students need time and support to reach their potential, as adults, we know this may occur well after our school years are completed. Teachers can contribute significantly, however, it is the parents, family members and significant adults who provide, love, stability, support and patience who have the right to celebrate any accolades along the young person’s journey.
Well done and congratulations if your son or daughter has completed their high school education. I know some of you are relishing the thought of no more school fees, you have much to celebrate!
God bless
St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal
Each year every class and the staff create a Christmas hamper for St Vincent de Paul. St Vincent de Paul provides our school with a list of hamper items and students will receive a token indicating an item to bring in for the hamper.
The hampers are one of the ways our school supports others in need. Families are welcome to include an additional item. The hampers create some great discussion in the classroom about the mission of the Catholic Church to provide outreach.
On Thursday, 29 November we will hold our Carols by Torchlight. The evening commences at 6pm with the arrival of Santa and there will be an opportunity for families to take a Santa photo free of charge! The carols will commence at 6.30pm.
All are welcome to attend!

White Ribbon Day 2018 is on Friday 23 November, and is Australia’s national day for raising awareness of men’s violence against women, and how to prevent it in your community and receive ongoing support.
A White Ribbon School is an overt symbol of a school’s commitment to building safer, more respectful and productive schools and communities. https://www.whiteribbon.org.au/day/resources
Why are schools important to stop violence against women?
Young people form behaviours, social skills and relationships during their time at school. During these formative years, ideas about men, women and their relationships are being learned. Exposure to harmful messaging and gender stereotyping can lead to attitudes that support inequality and disrespect towards women.
Breaking the cycle of violence
Schools play a pivotal role in breaking the cycle of violence by teaching young people how to recognise and challenge violence against women and build respectful relationships. Breaking the Silence engages the wider school community to promote and role model gender equality and create a safe, inclusive school culture to stop violence against women. https://www.whiteribbon.org.au/stop-violence-against-women/get-school-involved/breaking-silence-program/
Holy Spirit Catholic School is proud to be recognised as a White Ribbon School.
It is everyone’s responsibility to “spread the word about respectful relationships and preventing violence”.
Mini Vinnies…
Making a Difference!
“My experience with Brooklea was amazing! I met new friends. I learnt a lot about the elder's past lives and I played games with them like dominoes and a memory game. I loved visiting the elderly”.

Awkward thirteen
by Michael Grose
Thirteen is a pivotal age. It has been described as an age of rebirth where the teen takes over from the child.
This age group often needs a lot of support and responds well to confident, firm parenting. Your 13-year-old needs a mix of understanding, guidance, boundaries and nurturing to help them navigate this potentially tricky time in their lives. They need to be able to depend on you to be there for them, just as when they were an infant.
Devleoping Emotional Intelligence in Children Webinar
This webinar will explore the nature of emotional intelligence and how parents can act in ways to help their child manage big emotions. It will be presented by Michael Hawton, MAPS, a registered Psychologist and a full member of the Australian Psychological Society.
Michael is a former, trained primary school teacher and the author of Talk Less Listen More - solutions for children's difficult behaviour(2013) and Engaging Adolescents - holding tough conversations with teenagers (2017)
