Our shopping centres and local businesses are decorated mostly in maroon and gold with the occasional flourishes of blue to avoid complete bias and perhaps keep in favour with some customers. Even our youngest students are aware that something special is taking place in Townsville.

The excitement and enthusiasm are tangible as our city prepares for the spectacle and thrill of hosting the State of Origin. The chatter about this well publicised event, has for many, replaced the safe banter of topics such as the weather.

Regardless of the result of the match, the players like our students require a skill set. Education today has more in common with elite sport than perhaps we realise. What will today’s students require for their future employment? 

21st Century Skills include the ability to think critically, work collaboratively and think creatively. Personal, social and communication skills too, are critical for success. I am sure for those who attend the match or watch it from the comfort of their home, there will be an exhibition of 21st Century Skills.
