Each year the Parents and Friends' Association recognise a community member for their contribution to our school community over an extended period of time. Last Saturday, past parent, Sandra Crosato Matters received this diocesan award known as the Mappas Medallion.
Sandra and her husband, Ted were members of our school community while their children, William and Elisabeth attended Holy Spirit.
Sandra was recognised by our school for her contribution and spirit of generosity. Sandra ran the Plant Stall, was a member of the School Board and was an active member of our Indigenous Parents' Reference Group.
In last Sunday's gospel Jesus reminded the apostles to be great you must be a servant for others. Congratulations to Sandra who quietly and generously served our school community.
This Friday evening our Mini Vinnies senior students are putting their service into action. The students will participate in a sleepout - an awareness raising activity which focuses on the plight of the homeless.
Students and staff members participating will donate pillows to St Vincent de Paul to support the homeless. If you would like to support our students, pillows may be dropped into our office over the next week.
God bless
Geraldine

Mini Vinnies Sleepout - 26th October 2018
Vinnies School Sleepouts provide a unique insight into the complex issues that people experiencing homelessness face; issues often overlooked and misunderstood by the wider community.
They also provide students with an opportunity to experience what it is like to be homeless by ‘sleeping rough’ for one night. Their participation raises awareness of the realities facing people experiencing homelessness.
On Friday 26th October, the Year 6 Mini Vinnies students will participate in our annual Mini Vinnies Sleepout. It will be an evening of challenges, reflection and raising awareness.
Thank you to the parents/carers who will support their children in this important event and for the donation of pillows which will be given to St Vincent De Paul at our next whole school assembly.
If anyone else in our school community would like to support our Mini Vinnies in the Sleepout, you might like to donate a new pillow to the school office or directly to the St. Vincent De Paul office in West End.
Developing emotional intelligence
in children
by Michael Grose
Ever told a child to calm down only to see their emotions escalate instead?
Kids, like adults, need to recognise their feelings before they can regulate their emotional state, and that’s not easy. Emotional recognition is a complex process that takes practice. Even when we are good at it we don’t always get it right. Learning to recognise your feelings is a continuous process that’s best started when young, before the ups and downs of adolescence show up.
Developing Emotional Intelligence Webinar
This webinar will explore the nature of emotional intelligence and how parents can act in ways to help their child manage big emotions.
It will be presented by Michael Hawton, MAPS, a registered Psychologist and a full member of the Australian Psychological Society. Michael is a former, trained primary school teacher and the author of Talk Less Listen More – solutions for children’s difficult behaviour (2013) and Engaging Adolescents – holding tough conversations with teenagers (2017).
Spoonfed Generation
Michael Grose, one of Australia's leading parenting educators, explains the importance of children's independence and the vital stages to letting go. Never before has a generation been so dependent on their parents; now it's time to remove the spoon and put it back in the drawer.
We are open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8am at Tuckshop.
Your support with donations of spreads (not nut based) would be appreciated. Donations can be dropped off at Tuckshop.
