It is fairly typical, to look to the past with nostalgia. In this week as people reminisce about their whereabouts at the time of the moon landing and marvel at such an accomplishment, the majority of our school community weren’t even born!
I have spoken and written often of the great generosity of the Lynch family who donated the land for our school. I doubt the term ‘pay it forward’ existed in 1969 and yet the Lynch family’s contribution has perhaps had greater impact for our students and their families than the moon landing.
Neil Armstrong’s famous quote ‘one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’ while not having the political correctness half a century later, does resonate with the leap forward for our school and the many students, staff and parents who have continued to ‘pay it forward’.
The twenty-nine students and their families who commenced in 1969 would notice quite a transformation of our school from such humble beginnings.
As we take off for the next 50 years, I don’t know how many students will be inspired to be astronauts, but I do know the generosity of our school community will continue to be paid forward.
God bless,
Welcome back to term 3. I trust it was a relaxing break filled with much laughter with your children.
Our building project has begun with work already starting on the construction of our Year 5 and 6 classrooms. An area has been fenced off and the machinery has started clearing the ground ready for the footings.
As the cold weather arrives, a reminder that our school jumper is red and would encourage our families not to let their children convince them otherwise. Red jumpers are available at School Locker and can also be purchased from places like Best and Less without the school logo.
A huge thanks to those families driving safely in our school drop off and pick up areas. The safety of our students is very important to us. Please continue to adhere to road rules and staff instructions in these areas.
On the 3rd of August, we celebrate our 50 years with events happening throughout the afternoon and into the night. We look forward to celebrating with our families.
Happy days
Paul Martin
‘Who is my neighbour?’ On Sunday, we heard the story of The Good Samaritan, a story Jesus told in response to this question asked by a lawyer (Luke10:25-37). It is the story of a Samaritan who sees a Jewish traveller who has been beaten and robbed lying on the side of the road that he stops to help. What is extraordinary about this story is that the Samaritans and Jews had been enemies for many years. The Good Samaritan did not worry about the injured man’s religion or race; instead he saw someone who was suffering and needed his help. Our neighbour is whoever we meet and regardless of race or religion, if a fellow human being is suffering, we are called to treat them with the same loving concern and compassion as Jesus would. As we listen to the story, we realise the key question is not ‘Who is my neighbour?’ rather, ‘to whom can I be a neighbour?
This week at Holy Spirit we value unity. Unity is a very powerful virtue, and it brings great strength to us as individuals and the greater whole. When we practice unity, we allow ourselves to feel connected to everything and everyone. To best describe what that can mean to us as a school community, I would like to share the following from a recent article I was reading: ‘What is unity? How is it different than cooperation or tolerance? With cooperation, we work together to get something done. Unity is the feeling of being at one and connected with others. Unity naturally leads to cooperation. Unity is the feeling of being connected to our family even when we live miles apart. It is the sorrow we feel when we see someone’s suffering even if they are a total stranger. When we are united with others, their joy is our joy and their sorrow is our sorrow. Unlike tolerance, where we try and ‘accept’ differences, with unity, we notice and appreciate the uniqueness and diversity each individual brings to the whole. Although different in many ways, we feel connected.’ This week we pray our students connect with those people near and far to show their appreciation for others and the gifts they share with each other.
Help us tell others about loving our neighbours in tangible and practical ways?
Whenever we hear the parable of the Good Samaritan, we are reminded that love of God must always be accompanied by a love for our neighbours. At Catholic Mission, we are tasked with raising awareness of who those neighbours are, the context in which they live and the challenges they face. Most importantly, we share how each of us can play a part in transforming lives, through our prayerful and financial support for missionaries operating in those local contexts. If you would like to help tell the story of these selfless men and women of God, and the difference they are making in the world; if you have a gift for story-telling or public speaking, or if your heart is to help others discern how they can put their faith into action, then Catholic Mission would love to hear from you. Yesterday was the Feast of Our Lady of Mt Carmel. This Feast Day is of great significance to Father John. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th and early to mid-13th century. They built in the midst of their hermitages a chapel which they dedicated to Mary. They prayed for her protection and her help in contemplative prayer.
God bless.

Mulkadee is a great experience for all and is a significant event in the life of our Diocese. This year 102 students from Holy Spirit School will work with a spectacular line up of Arts professionals in their chosen field of Choir, Band, Orchestral Strings, and Guitar.
The concert on Friday night is the culmination of the students’ hard work throughout the week and a testament to their talents.
This event is a ticketed event. The concert is on Friday 26th July at The Entertainment and Convention Centre. The show commences at 7.00pm and concludes at approximately 10.30pm, with a 30 minute interval.

Kids Do Better When Parents Are Involved In School Life
Recent research confirms that family involvement in education can help children move up the social and economic ladder, regardless of background.
So instead of hoping to win Lotto to set kids up for life, we can encourage them to be optimistic, resilient and able to manage their emotions, all of which help them to do their best.
For tips and ideas on how to effectively support your child’s education and future success, and make your own life a bit easier in the process, you can now do the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program for free in Queensland including self-help and online. (There are Teen Triple P programs too.)
For details, or to get started today, go to: www.triplep-parenting.net

All money raised will be put back into our school community into such projects as recycled seating, plants and trees, donation to Missions and additions to our school grounds.
Once again, one of the P and F fundraisers is the 2019/20 Entertainment Book. This year, no hard copies will be sent home. Families are asked to use the following link to purchase a digital or hard copy of the Book. Books can still be collected from the school after you have purchased them online. The P and F thank everyone in advance for supporting this fundraiser.

Alpha: have your heard about Alpha? ALPHA is a series of gatherings with the aims of loving, learning and living by bringing people into a relationship with Jesus by sharing the good news of the ‘gospel.' It involves each week gathering, commencing with a shared meal, friendly interaction and getting to know each other, prayer and watching a 30 minute video, then breaking into small groups to discuss and share thoughts, experiences and questions about each video. One weekend during the series we will hold a day retreat especially focusing on the Holy Spirit - who He is, what He does and how we can be filled with the Holy Spirit.
There is no cost involved, apart from your own time and now and again bringing along a meal to share. All people, young and older, are welcome as well as family and friends from other areas, those not practising their faith and or those interested in exploring the Catholic Faith.
Alpha will be run in Holy Spirit Parish again this year, following its success last year and will commence on Thursday 25th July from 6-8pm and then on each Thursday evening till September. For further information or to register, please contact Blanche on 0428 736 726 or blanchecrisp@gmail.com.
Parents, it is essential that you advise the office if your child is going to be absent. This can be done by emailing absent@hsstsv.catholic.edu.au or via the skoolbag app.
