1969 – Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, Sugar Sugar by the Archies was a top hit, Australia dominated Men’s Tennis and two ballots were conducted each year for National Service. 1969 is also the year when the first class of thirty-seven students attended Holy Spirit Catholic School.
Today we celebrated Holy Spirit Day with a liturgy and activities from yesteryear, including games such as marbles and French Cricket! Our school physically is very different from that first class of thirty-seven students in 1969.
It is with some nostalgia that we remember the school of fifty years ago. We are living in different times and our students require a school which caters for the needs of today’s learners.
During the June/July school holidays another block will be demolished to allow for the building of eight new classrooms for our Year 5 and Year 6 students.
On Monday evening our CAFÉ (Community and Friends Engagement, formerly Parents and Friends) committee met. This small but loyal group continue to look for and organize events for parents and children in our school community.
On your behalf, I would like to congratulate them on our most recent event, the fete. Approximately $25 000 was raised at this year’s fete, I encourage you to provide feedback both positive and constructive criticism (with solutions) to assist with the planning for 2020.
Our CAFÉ Committee are already planning our next gathering, Saturday 3 August when we will hold an open day for past students, families and staff members. In the evening we will celebrate Holy Spirit Under the Stars as our students lead us in dance and song through the decades!
What remains of our past? Amidst many fond memories, the spirit of generosity and community!
God Bless,
Geraldine
In the readings for this week, The Ascension of our Lord (Luke 24:46-53) into heaven was celebrated at Mass on Sunday. The time had come for Jesus to say goodbye to his disciples and return to his Father in heaven. Jesus commanded that the forgiveness of sins be preached to all and then was carried from their sight but was still with them in their hearts and in their gatherings. We are called, like the disciples, to be Jesus’ continued presence on earth bringing freedom, healing and forgiveness to all.
This week at Holy Spirit, we value faithfulness. Faithfulness is highly regarded throughout the Bible. It is listed by Paul as a ‘fruit of the Spirit’ (Galatians 5:22). Jesus puts faithfulness alongside justice and mercy (Matthew 23:23). Mother Teresa said, ‘I do not pray for success. I ask for faithfulness.’ God’s faithfulness towards us gives us an example to follow in our own relationships. Faithfulness is something we should strive for in friendships and in our relationship with others and God. This week we pray that each one of us in our own way can share God’s words and faith with those around us.
This Sunday, our parish celebrate the Feast Day of Pentecost. Mass will be held at 10am and will be presided by Fr John and Bishop Tim. This will be followed by cultural presentations and lunch in Bibi Goo Yumba. If you are interested in attending, please let the Parish Office know on 47791404 for catering purposes. Everyone is welcome.
Congratulations to our second group of students who received the Sacrament of First Eucharist on Sunday with the Holy Spirit Parish. Once again, it was lovely to see so many families and friends support the children on their faith journey.
God bless,
Caroline Fuller

2019 ADF Families Survey
Families get the chance to tell Defence what they think about military life
Being a member of the ADF is a unique experience, not only for the individuals in uniform, but for their families who are also asked to accept the unique challenges associated with military life.
ADF families have the opportunity to provide feedback about their experiences and views on service life through the 2019 ADF Families Survey. This year’s survey will focus on services and support available for Defence families.
If you are the family of a permanent ADF member or a permanent ADF member looking after dependants on your own, tell Defence about your experiences in the ADF Families Survey.
The survey should only take about 20 minutes to complete and is online at:
- Defence Community Organisation www.defence.gov.au/dco
- Defence Families of Australia www.dfa.org.au
The ADF Families Survey opens on 3 June and will close on 21 June 2019. The results are expected to be available in late-2019.
