- Our Mission Statement
Each and every student at Holy Spirit Catholic School has potential to achieve and potential to make a positive difference. It is our hope and dream that every child achieves their own dreams and aspirations. Potential can of course remain untapped. There are many examples, in life, of people who haven’t made good. Success, no matter how it is measured, requires others to support, to identify, to inspire, to acknowledge, to encourage, to assist and to challenge.
As adults we remember listening to the dreams of children. Where do these dreams come from? Children are born with vivid imaginations. Imaginations just like bodies need nourishing. Our responsibility as parents and educators is to inspire others, and in particular children. How can we do that? We can inspire others by:
- Being a good example - people watch what you do more than they listen to what you say. Be someone worth emulating.
- Caring about others - people don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care. Take a genuine interest in people.
- Encouraging - everyone goes through tough times. When you support people and encourage them through these times, you’ll be inspiring them to see the best in themselves and the situation.
- Be inspired yourself - look for people, ideas, environments and knowledge that you find inspiring and motivating.
- Share from your own experience - share your wisdom from your unique point of view.
- Be vulnerable - be willing to share your failures as well as your successes. Others will relate to you. They’ll understand that they’re not the only ones with challenges.
- Tell stories - facts tell and stories sell. They inspire too.
- Be a good communicator - watch how you speak and what you say.
In our school community of 641 children, 89 staff, we all have dreams. There may be the child who grows up to discover the cure for cancer, or the child who is able to make a positive difference towards climate change, or a child that is able to resolve world poverty. It is up to each one of us to challenge and inspire the children in our care to get closer to these dreams.
Our role as educators and parents is critical to assisting our children reach their potential in life. Our roles will vary from supporter, to inspirer, to guide, teacher, challenger and occasionally we ‘just need to bring our children back to reality’.
Look around our school this week and notice the 641 children. Every single one of them has the potential to make a difference in life!
“Every great dream began with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars and to change the world”. (Harriet Tubman)
Staffing Update
At the end of this term, Miss Kathleen Campbell will be moving back to Brisbane due to her partner being transferred to the ‘big smoke’. Kathleen is a wonderful educator and we wish her all the best as she settles into her new school community down South. We welcome Mrs Glennis Weatherstone who will teach the lovely children in 1D for the remainder of the year. Glennis is an experienced Early Years educator and is looking forward to joining our school community.
Mr Paul Martin will be taking some well-deserved Long Service Leave for the last two days of this term and the first two weeks of Term 4. We wish Paul all the best as he and his wife travel around the beautiful state of Tasmania. During Paul’s absence, we welcome Mrs Melanie Albress to our Leadership Team. Mel will be Acting APA.
Best wishes
Kath
Thank you to all the families for your effort to have our students looking fantastic for our school photos. The photographers even commented on how beautiful our students were in uniform and with their manners. This is a credit to our families. Again, thank you.
The photos will be arriving around week 1 or 2 of next term. We have also arranged for group photos of our sporting teams and choirs to happen on October 17. More information to come closer to the day.
This Thursday will see the return of our Year 5 and 6 Disco in the Hall at 6pm and finishing at 8pm. Parents will need to collect students from the Hall as they will not depart the disco without an adult to collect them. Thank you to the generous families who have volunteered to assist on the night.
After overhearing the Pharisees complaining about him spending so much time with tax collectors and sinners, Jesus told a number of parables (Luke 15:1-32). The Lost Coin is the story of a poor woman who lost one coin from her savings. She searched and searched the house, carrying on until her efforts were rewarded and she found it. The Prodigal Son told the story of a father who forgave his son the bad choices he made and welcomed him home. The Pharisees were very proud of their “goodness” and their obedience of the law. They would not associate with people they considered to be sinners and yet Jesus welcomed sinners, forgiving them and offering them a new start.
This week at Holy Spirit we value compassion, meaning sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. Compassion gives us the ability to understand someone else's situation and the desire to take action to improve their lives. It is the quality that allows us to step outside of ourselves and see the circumstances of others. It supplies the will power to do what is necessary to make the world a more caring place. This week, we pray our students show compassion to those around them.
Last Thursday night, a number of our Year 6 Mini Vinnies students participated in our Homelessness Awareness Night. We were joined by Mary McAuliffe, Youth Engagement and Development Officer for the Townsville Diocese, St Vincent de Paul Society Branch. Mary shared statistics and information about Australia’s Homeless population. Throughout the night, the students participated in activities that raised awareness about the misfortune of others. One of the highlights was using cardboard boxes only to make a form of shelter that they then explained to the group. Thank you to all our families for supporting the night by donating much needed items for people in our community. Your compassion and generosity will be very much appreciated.

Tomorrow is the special feast of the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus. We honour Mary as a Spirit-filled person who listened to God speaking to her. Mary showed the fruits of the Spirit in the way she lived her life. She can inspire us all and show us how to be patient, kind, joyful and hope-filled people so that we too can live out Jesus’ message.
Loving God, You love us and want us to be happy.
Help us to use the gifts of the Spirit like Mary did.
May we be inspired by the qualities Mary showed and look to her as a model of kindness and goodness, patience and peace, love and joy.
We ask this prayer through Jesus, Your Son.
Amen.
Have a great week.
God bless.
Caroline Fuller

Physical activity is critical for children's quality of life
This research examined the relationship between children’s 24-hour time use and their health-related quality of life. It finds that physical activity matters most to children’s quality of life across all age groups – more so than screen time and sleep.

The multidisciplinary team includes 5 Defence Social Workers (DSW), 3 Military Support Officers (MSO), 2 Family Liaison Officers (FLO), 1 Education Liaison Officer (EDLO) and a Business Support Officer (BSO).
Members of the team also travel to remote locations of FNQ such as Mount Isa and Thursday Island, and always look forward to connecting with the wider Defence community.
