The Spirit of Catholic Education Week awards recognise individuals or teams (staff members, parents/carers or volunteers) who are making an outstanding contribution to the life of their school community. Holy Spirit Catholic School congratulates Mrs Jane Aylward on being nominated for 2023. We are very proud of Jane’s service to our school community. Below is her citation which will be read out and presented to her this afternoon at a special ceremony hosted by the Townsville Catholic Education Executive Director, Mrs Jacqui Francis.
Jane demonstrates outstanding service to staff, parents and students within the Holy Spirit Catholic School community. Jane displays generosity and service to the life of the school, contributing to many extra curricula areas to ensure students benefit from a balanced education. Jane’s contribution and sustained service to Holy Spirit spans across 35 years. Jane continues to challenge herself through professional development and is eager to learn new skills as part of her life-long learning journey and commitment to education.
Jane inspires hope in her teaching team, as well as the whole staff. Jane’s random acts of kindness spread joy across the whole school community. She promotes Catholic identity by encouraging a respectful and welcoming culture among students, staff and parents through the Gospel Values. This is particularly evident when she works pastorally with students through restorative justice principles. Jane makes a positive difference in the lives of students by challenging them to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of the community.
Well done, Jane!

We are looking forward to welcoming the following people who make up the Validation Panel:

Trina Neilsen – Visiting APRE from St Joseph’s The Strand
Mr Fred Nucifora – Critical Friend

Mulkadee
Last Friday evening, I had the privilege of attending the Mulkadee concert at the Townsville Entertainment Centre. Mulkadee is held annually and brings together students who are in Years 4 – 12 from all Catholic schools in our Diocese. Children spent a week participating in a range of disciplines including Choir, Drama, Dance, Strings, Band and Guitar. The concert was AWESOME! Congratulations and thank you to all involved, especially our own teachers and tutors who attended and shared their knowledge and skills with the children they were involved with - Mrs Sue Laing, Mr Stephen Frewan-Lord, Mr Noel Price, Ms Sarah Little, Mr Jonathon Conrad, Ms Laurell Bourne, Mrs Anne Mendiolea, Mrs Louise Wood and Mrs Melissa Taylor.

Happy Days,

In Sunday’s Gospel, we hear Jesus telling the parable of the rich man who decided to build bigger and better barns because he had had a bountiful harvest and could not fit all the crops into his barns to be stored. If he had been a kind and generous man, he could have used the extra food to make life easier for those in need. Money and riches may not make us rich in the eyes of God.
This week at Holy Spirit we value excellence. Excellence often refers to greatness, the very best. Achieving excellence is a very difficult thing to do at times. It is a quality that people really appreciate, because it is so hard to find. Striving for excellence is trying to do our best at whatever task we set our minds to do. At Holy Spirit, staff are always looking for ways to help students achieve excellence. This week, during Catholic Education Week, we pray that our students draw upon their many skills and show excellence in a given area.
Yesterday, July 26th, was the day to remember the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus. While they are not mentioned in the Gospels, tradition holds, on the grounds of very old testimonies, that Saints Joachim and Ann were the father and mother of Mary, the Mother of God.
Catholic Education Week is a lovely time to reflect on the importance of being in one of the 313 Catholic Schools in Queensland with their distinctive mission and ethos. It is a great opportunity to look at what makes Holy Spirit a great school. Yesterday, our Term 3 school captains, Abbie and Kaden, attended the Catholic Education Week Mass at the Cathedral. Josivel from Year 6 also represented our school as an altar server. It was celebrated with schools from across the Diocese and presided by Bishop Tim.
Loving God, You are with us always.
Bless us as we travel on our journey.
Bless our minds so that we may think of you.
Bless our eyes so that we may see the good things in our lives.
Bless our ears so that we may hear your Word and truly live it.
Bless our hands so that we may be willing to help and support others.
Bless our feet so that we may be willing to walk in another’s shoes.
Bless our hearts so that we may know your love and show it others.
Amen
God bless.

In this edition of SchoolTV - PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & EXERCISE
In the last decade, children’s participation in physical activity and exercise has been in decline. In this digital age, children are using computers and mobile devices, not only for learning, but for relaxation and recreation purposes. This sedentary lifestyle is having a detrimental effect on today’s youth. The key is finding the balance.
Research shows, that regular physical activity and exercise leads to changes in the brain. It improves cognitive function, elevates mood, enhances learning and improves academic outcomes. Playing sport helps kids develop fundamental movement skills impacting positively on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to develop social skills. Parents play an important role in helping children establish positive habits that will benefit their children in the long-term.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will discover practical advice relating to the benefits of regular physical activity and exercise, as well as tips on how to get their kids motivated and moving more.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact your child’s teacher for further information or seek medical or professional help.

With most kids back at school, the eSafety Commissioner is urging parents to look out for signs of cyberbullying.
Reports of cyberbullying to eSafety are up 80% this year compared with the first six months of 2021.
Of particular concern are social media challenges being shared by young people. While these online challenges can be fun, they can also be used to humiliate and shame others.
If you notice a young person in your care becoming anxious, withdrawn, secretive or not wanting to be around their friends, they may be experiencing online abuse.
Read the media release to learn more.
Critical incidents professional learning
As educators, you may need to respond to and report abuse or distressing content online. These 'critical incidents' could involve harms such as cyberbullying, fight videos, grooming, suicide or pornography.
eSafety’s new professional learning webinar Responding and reporting: critical online incidents in school settings, starts on Wednesday, 3 August 2022 and is free to attend.
This webinar supports wellbeing coordinators, school leaders and anyone involved in managing critical online incident response in the school community. It also includes steps on collecting evidence if you need to make a report to eSafety.
New parent webinar posters to share
eSafety runs free webinars for parents and carers of school-aged children.
