- Our Mission Statement
This year, Pope Francis' instituted World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly to be held on the fourth Sunday of July (25 July for 2021), close to the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus (26 July).
Pope Francis instituted the World Day because ‘grandparents are often forgotten, and we forget this wealth of preserving roots and passing on’ what the elderly have received.
According to Vatican News, he emphasised the importance of grandparents and grandchildren getting to know one another, because ‘as the prophet Joel says, grandparents seeing their grandchildren dream’, while ‘young people, drawing strength from their grandparents, will go forward and prophesy’.
Usually, many grandparents visit Townsville at this time of year. In a typical year, we have traditionally held a special assembly in Term 3 to honour grandparents and those senior adults who fulfil such a role for our students. If you have attended this assembly in the past, you will know how well it is attended and it is evident that grandparents aren’t forgotten, they are in fact very significant in the lives of our students. We are currently looking at how to schedule such an event in recognition of this essential group.
In our school community, grandparents fulfil a variety of roles from driving children to and from school, caring for children when they are sick to assisting in the tuck-shop and at key events in the life of our school.
To all of the grandparents and significant elders in our community – take a bow! You are valued and appreciated. May God continue to enrich your lives as you watch your grandchildren develop.
God bless,
Geraldine
“COLOUR ME CRAZY 2021”
The second running of our school community event, “COLOUR ME CRAZY” (fun run/obstacle course), will be held on August 1st from 10am. Registrations for this event will take place on the day from 9.30am (after Mass).
The course will begin in the small oval close to OSHC and travel around the school finishing back on the small oval. This is a fun event and no champions are crowned. You may walk, run, jog or skip your way around the course to celebrate our Catholic community that is Holy Spirit Catholic School. You do not need to be a ‘gladiator’ to complete our course. A sense of fun and enjoyment is the aim of this event.
Happy Catholic Education Week everyone!
What do you need to know?
- This event is for Holy Spirit Catholic School families only (for insurance purposes).
- The cost is $5 PER PERSON OR $10 FAMILY. Funds from the proceeds from the school Fete have enabled us to lower this cost. Thank you!
- Glasses must be worn for protection. Colourful glasses are available from the office for $5.
- Those concerned with asthma, a bandanna is recommended to be worn over the mouth to prevent inhalation of the non toxic powder that is used.
- All participants must wear closed in shoes on the course.
- Towels for your trip home in the car are essential. There will not be shower facilities available.
The first and only session will begin at 10am
Volunteers are asked to be in place 5 minutes before the start. Competitors are asked to assemble near the gazebo ready for the starter. There will be a staggered start approach to reduce congestion on the course.
If you are able to volunteer to assist at a station,
contact your class teacher or email Patrice Figg (pfigg4@hsstsv.catholic.edu.au); Kathleen Campbell (kcampbell6@hsstsv.catholic.edu.au or contact the office. All help will be greatly appreciated. We Need You!
Our parent group, the P&F, will be selling sausage on bread and cold drinks on the day. The tuckshop ladies will also have a small selection of cakes and cold cups for sale at the finish line.
We are really looking forward to celebrating with you and to ‘Colour your day the Spirit way’.
Get in the Spirit!
Paul Martin
Sunday’s Gospel, John 6:1-15, tells a story of compassion and generosity when Jesus takes care of the needs of his followers who had walked many miles to listen to him. Jesus asked his disciples where he could buy some bread to feed the crowd but he and his disciples did not have enough money to feed them. Through the generosity of a small boy with five loaves and two fish, Jesus was able to transform the food to feed everybody. He took the bread and gave thanks to God, blessed the food before sharing it just as the priest does every week with the Eucharist at Sunday Mass.
This week at Holy Spirit we value gratitude. Gratitude is one of the 4 Resilience Project principles where they describe gratitude as paying attention to the things that we have right now and not worrying about the many things we don’t have. An important aspect of gratitude is noticing the positive that exist around us. People who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things they're thankful for experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better and are known to express more compassion and kindness towards others. This week we pray that we notice good things, look for and appreciate them.
Next Monday, July 26th, we remember the parents of Mary. While they
are not mentioned in the Gospels, tradition holds, on the grounds of very old testimonies, that Saints Joachim and Ann were the father and mother of Mary, the Mother of God. Pope Francis has proclaimed the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly will be celebrated on the fourth Sunday in July each year – July 25 this year. It is marked near the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.
Next week we celebrate Catholic Education Week. This year’s theme is ‘A Spirited Tomorrow’. This theme acknowledges the long tradition of Catholic education and its continued relevance in preparing students for the future. The theme also references the work of the Plenary Council in discerning the way forward for the Church in Australia.
God bless

This event is a ticketed event. The concert is on Friday 23rd July at The Entertainment and Convention Centre and commences at 7.30pm.
The NCCD (Nationally Consistent Collect ion of Data) takes place every year. The NCCD is a collection that counts:
- the number of school students receiving an adjustment or ‘help’ due to disability
- the level of adjustment they are receiving to access education on the same basis as other students.
Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
